How starting a doodling habit could change your life for the better

How starting a doodling habit could change your life for the betterHow starting a doodling habit could change your life for the betterFor years weve been hearing about how the simple act of doodling can improve your memory and brain function and otherwise make you better at what you do. But it isnt just your brain that gets a boost, its your confidence as well.A new study from Drexel University concluded that adding even short bursts (15-20 minutes) of art or doodling AKA creative self-expression or art-making tasks could result in individuals perceiving themselves as having good ideas and being able to solve problems. So, youll both have fun creating and give yourself a big confidence boost. Here are some other great reasons to doodleBreak it downAuthor/Illustrator Dawn DeVries Sokol explains that her years of drawing have taught her to look at things differently overall. Drawing has also taught me patience and has made me look at life around me differently, DeVries Sokol said. I now look at objects and break them down as how I would attempt to draw them, even if I dont have a pencil and sketchbook in hand. For example, I see lines more. I see simple shapes more. Instead of looking at something as a whole object, I see it in pieces. Ive trained my mind how to draw even when Im not physically drawing.Creativity lesson learned Using one part of your brain to solve a visual puzzle could help you think differently and ultimately find solutions for unrelated problems.Use your words (or their words)If you cant seem to draw your own idea, using words - even borrowed words or mantras - could help. Mixed media artist Suzee Stanley, Owner of 8 Track Romeo used to sell lyric art and jewelry on Etsy for years I always chose lyrics that had a positive or fun message which are not always easy to find, Stanley said. Some of the best songs have lyrics that dont really say much of anything. I always chose words that moved me in some way, and I must have chosen well because we sold thousands.Creativity lesson learned If youre feeling stuck in a project or moment, try to find inspiration outside of yourself. Use a quote or lyric and try using decorative lettering to make it artistic as well as inspirational.Remind yourselfNovelist Emily Carpenter mentioned hearing a friend talk about moving out of the problem and into the solution, and says she might have morphed her words into the mantra. Carpenter feels her mantra is really helpful in counteracting the tendency of my emotions to get all jacked up when I hit a serious bump in the road. I have to literally remind my body, which is reacting physically to bad news, that its not the end of the world and life is a series of problems and there will be a solution. And it really works.Creativity lesson learned If youre more of a word person than a doodler, mantras can help during high-stress moments. Find one that works for you and hang it over your desk.Keep practicingIt can be frustrating for both artists and business professionals not to be able to automatically or consistently present what they envision. DeVries Sokol uses the drawing analogy to encourage persistence. I think like any skill, non-artists can draw as well. But you have to practice. You have to do it every day. The passion and WANTING to draw will help fuel you to make that commitment. She admits Sometimes I have a difficult time starting, but I eventually have to tell myself its necessary if I want to improve my drawing skills. I have a long way to go but feel like Ive already pushed myself further than I ever thought I could.Creativity lesson learned From sketching to creating an outline for the next big idea, the first time is not the charm. Keep practicing and updating your artistic skill set.Wondering how to become more creative? DeVries Sokol offered some tipsDont be afraid of the blank page. If thats a concern, get about 30 sheets of copier paper and draw on thatSet aside 10 minutes of every day. Get a book of prom pts for ideas/inspiration or just doodle while listening to music.Try another medium Try rubber stamping, scrapbooking, or doodling in a planner.Dont be so hard on yourself Doodling is a great way to get into drawing because its more about repetition and letting your mind wander. Besides, DeVries Sokol says You may HATE your drawings while others see them as works of art. We are our own worst critics.

A Cornucopia of Keywords for Your Resume

A Cornucopia of Keywords for Your Resume A Cornucopia of Keywords for Your Resume Finding the Right WordsOne of the easiest ways to find keywords to include in your resume is to look at the job posting itself. By matching the language in your resume to the language a potential employer uses to describe the job, you reinforce the impression that youre the right person for the position. If they want a tech-savvy content manager, then describe yourself using those terms rather than as a computer-literate media manager.Once youve examined the job posting and the companys website, you may need to look farther afield to generate relevant keywords. The New York State Department of Labor has an excellent list of general keywords as well as industry-specific terms. You might also try searching for jobs in your field on a site like indeed.com or careerbuilder.com to get ideas. Linkedin.com can be another great source for inspiration scan the resumes of people in your network to get ideas abo ut how other people describe their skills.Beware of buzzwords for the sake of buzz, overly technical jargon, or vague terms that take up space without adding value. Be specific, especially when you list software proficiencies. You also want to avoid acronyms, which may get overlooked by applicant tracking systems.Beating the GatekeeperMany companies are using electronic scanning systems, called applicant tracking systems or ATS, to weed out weak resumes before theyre ever seen by an actual person. These programs match keywords and accomplishments in resumes with the criteria the hiring managers are looking for. However, simply stuffing your resume with non-grammatical keywords can backfire, according to James Brian of Monster.com, as quoted by CNN. He says that Monsters software detects keyword bombing, where applicants frontload their resumes with keywords designed to beat the program.Even if you dont have to beat ATS software, keywords are leise a good way to catch the eye of a hi ring manager. In the six seconds they look at your resume, those keywords will jump out at them. While it may not guarantee an interview- after all, you still need to have the skills and experience to meet the companys needs- it certainly cant hurt.Incorporating Keywords SkillfullySusan Ireland recommends incorporating keywords into your resume in a subtle way. She advises, Weave your keywords into the statements in your resume. For example, you could talk about your management skills in one of your Summary statements. Tweak your job titles and the language you use to describe your experience, but be wary of twisting the facts just to use as many keywords as possible. You should also be sure to use the same keywords throughout your resume, cover letter, LinkedIn profile, etc. Consider your communication and web presence as your brand. Be consistent across all platforms.Remember, no matter how stellar your skills are or how hot your keywords are, sloppy writing will cost you every tim e. The Backwards Closing Technique

The Backwards Closing TechniqueThe Backwards Closing TechniqueImagine if you started a sales cycle in reverse order. Instead of prospecting and qualifying, you asked for referrals and discovered additional sales opportunities. While this may seem insane, the Backwards Closing technique, when performed correctly, is not only an effective sales tool but usually is one of the most stress-free closes you, and your customers, will ever experience. Where It All Begins To serve as a quick review, a typical sales cycle starts with prospecting and ends by asking for referrals. Most salespeople work very hard at moving from step one to the final step and often lose a sale because either they dont do a good enough job in one step or the customer loses interest during a step. While losing sales is part of sales, what if you employed a backward approach to your sales cycle? In other words, what if you began a sales cycle by asking for referrals? It may sound a bit insane to those who have bee n in sales for a long time, but there is a proven bit of psychology behind this approach. A basic human need is to be consistent with our self-image. In other words, if you say something to someone about yourself, then you will be driven to demonstrate proof that your statement is accurate and reflects who you are. Getting a prospect to give you a list of referrals of people that she knows who may benefit from your product or service, puts them in a position of having to support their recommendation by learning more, and eventually using your product. Getting the Referrals Walking into someones office and asking for referrals will probably get you kicked out of the office quickly. If you were to present yourself and your product or service professionally, gauge the level of interest of the person to whom you are presenting, then ask for a few other professionals who they think might be interested in what you are representing, your chances increase dramatically. What most backwar d closing technique users experience is that they feel that the customer is immediately put at ease when they realize that you are not trying to sell them something. This removal of tension causes the customer to relax a bit and to drop their guard. If you are going to get a referral, it will most likely come seconds after the customer drops their guard and before they have a chance to give deeper thought to your request. Ask a Closing Question If you are successful in getting a name or two, your follow-up must be to ask your customers permission to use their name when approaching the person they referred you to. In most cases, the customer will balk when asked this question and, hopefully, want to learn more about your product so that they can either be more comfortable about having given you a referral or to discover if your product will benefit them in some way. Either way, know that if you reach this point, you are in a strong position. Remembering that people want to live up to their self-image and to how they present themselves, many customers who give a referral end up buying the product. Theyve already given their friends or business associates a recommendation by giving their name(s) to you, and know are driven to remain consistent with their actions. An important part of this style of selling is to be keenly aware of buying signals. Questions that often come after your request for referrals must be seen as opportunities to demonstrate, or at least discuss the values of your product. Since most customers are quite adept at meeting with sales professionals, using the backward style will, in many cases, create some curiosity in your customers mind. With curiosity comes questions. Questions are buying signals in disguise. This Backwards Closing Technique is not for everyone and most likely will result in more denials than actual referrals. The opportunities that do close usually end up resulting in additional sales when you approach the referrals. The final benefit to this style of closing is that you always remember one of the Golden Rules of schlussverkauf Ask for Referrals

Offices are too hot or too cold is there a better way to control room temperature

Offices are too hot or too cold is there a better way to control room temperatureOffices are too hot or too cold is there a better way to control room temperatureIn any office, home or other shared space, theres almost always someone whos too cold, someone whos too hot and someone who doesnt know what the fuss around the thermostat is all about. Most often, building owners and operators find out how their heating and cooling systems are doing by asking occupants if theyre comfortable or whether they want to be cooler or warmer. However, everyone has a different ideal temperature at any given time, based on all sorts of factors, including their age and gender, their physical activity level, what theyre wearing and even how much stress theyre feeling at the moment. This is a complex problem For instance, people entering a cool room in the summer may initially feel comfortable but end up feeling too cold after a while. Those human variables are considered static over time in the curren t industry guidelines for heating and cooling, which recommend a range of 68.5 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit in winter and 75 to 80.5 in summer. As a result, people often feel too hot or too cold, despite how much energy heating and cooling systems use.More people would be more comfortable improving their health and productivity if furnaces and air conditioners could respond in real time to how building occupants were feeling, including how they change through the day. Our research group has been working on how to incorporate human feedback about room temperatures into heating and cooling systems. What were developing could help people feel more comfortable, and even let buildings use less energy.Getting peoples feedbackSome researchers have proposed asking officemates to basically vote on what the temperature should be. Using a phone app or website, building occupants say whether theyre too hot or too cold, and what would make them more comfortable. An algorithm then analyzes the grou ps answer and calculates a temperature estimated to be most acceptable to most people. Some systems let users vote on whether they are comfortable, and what would make them more so.Carol Menassa, et al., CC BY-NDHowever, that method has two significant limitations To work best, it requires near-constant input from people who are supposed to be working and still doesnt factor in whether someone who is uncomfortable could help themselves by putting on or taking off a sweater. It also doesnt take into account how peoples bodies experience temperature, which is closely tied to how cool or warm they prefer their environment to be.Monitoring temperature remotelyIn previous research, ur group placed multiple temperature sensors around an office, and combined their data with information from wristbands that sensed occupants skin temperature and heart rates and apps that polled workers about how they felt. We found that adding the data about how peoples bodies were reacting made the algorith m more accurate at calculating the room temperature at which people occupying a given space would feel most comfortable.A multi-sensor system monitors the environment and room occupants, and adjusts the room heat and cooling accordingly.Carol Menassa, et al., CC BY-NDOur current project, seeks to make things even easier and less intrusive for people, eliminating the wristbands and apps, and only using remote sensing of peoples skin temperature to measure how comfortable they are. We developed a method using regular cameras, thermal imaging and distance sensors to detect occupants presence in a space, focus on their faces and measure their skin temperature. From that data, our algorithm calculates whether and how to change the temperature in the room regardless of the number of occupants in the space. When we tested it in an office occupied by seven people, they complained less about feeling uncomfortably cold or warm.Face detection software coupled with temperature-sensing cameras can evaluate whether a person is warm, cold or just right.Carol Menassa, et al., CC BY-NDThis method is most effective in multi-occupancy spaces, like open-plan offices, meeting rooms and theaters. It can accommodate, and account for, differences in temperature between people in different areas of a room, whether they are standing or sitting or moving around. And it can adjust on the fly without requiring active human feedback. Our group will continue to explore this and other non-intrusive methods to help people feel more comfortable and be healthier and more productive.Carol Menassa, Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Michigan Da Li, Ph.D. Student in Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Michigan, and Vineet Kamat, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of MichiganThis article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. 5 Things Recruiters Look for in a Resume

5 Things Recruiters Look for in a Resume 5 Things Recruiters Look for in a Resume Each recruiter willonly spend about six seconds skimming a potential applicants resume. Six seconds. While conveying your persuasive work history in this length of time could seem daunting, it doesnt have to be. Recruiters who read resumes arent doing anything surprising if your resume seems like it could persuade a hiring manager, theyll forward it on. If it doesnt, theyll reject it. Its that simple. Here are five things to include to ensure your resume makes it into the yes pile. What do recruiters look for in a resume?1. Include key data pointsA recruiter spends most of her time 80%, in fact looking at your basic information, like your current title and company, your work history, the length of time you worked at your previous job, and your education. If you dont include this kind of relevant information, a recruiter isnt likely to pass your resume on to a hiring manager.2. Have a clean and easy-to- read resumeWith such limited time to review applicants, a recruiter isnt going waste time deciphering your resume. To make it easy to read, follow a few simple resume font rules. First, dont use too many typefaces limit your resume to two. Second, dont decrease the space between your lines to make your resume shorter. And, finally, dont overuse bold font. 3. Use accomplishment statementsAccomplishment statements are quantifiable variables that demonstrate to a recruiter that you did your job well. Instead of simply listing job duties, you should include accomplishment statements that talk about how you performed your previous job. Try listing accomplishments involving time or money.4. Show your motivationAll employers want their new hires to be inspired by the company to really want it mora than all other applicants. Demonstrate your interest by including your motivation and enthusiasm behind applying to the job in your resumes summary statement. A summary statement demonstrates ho w your qualifications meet the employers needs, but also why you are excited about the company and the position.5. ATS-friendly keywordsTo get recruited, you have to make sure a recruiter actually finds your resume. ATS will scan through resumes to make sure the keywords from the resume exactly match the keywords desired by the employer. Before you submit your resume to a job board or career site recruiters are likely to peruse, optimize your resume with Jobscan. Jobscan scans a job posting and your resume, and helps you to optimize your resume for ATS.
