So I talked to a few recruiters and came up with five things you can do to look attractive to recruiters. 1. Post to sites with good search tools. Recruiters like to visit sites that aggregate resumes and offer specific search criteria, says recruiter Matt Millunchick. Blogs are difficult to search but social networking sites like MySpace and LinkedIn facilitate keyword searches. Be sure to fill in profiles thoroughly on these sites so that your resume matches more searches. 2. Choose your friends carefully, and then monitor them. Recruiters will put up with a little quirkiness in an online profile but dont worry only about what you post yourself: Be careful about what photos of you are available and what and your friends post about you, warns Millunchick. Recruiters will find everything. Recruiter Mark Jaffe told me he has a full-time employee with a masters degree who researches candidates. If you have not read the first two, now is the time to review the posts on Weak Ties and LinkedIn Advanced Search. LinkedIn company pages are a valuable resource in managing your career. They offer you background on the company, stream of posts and announcements, and two hidden gems. These two gems are: âSimilar Companiesâ on LinkedIn Mobile App or âPeople Also Viewedâ on LinkedIn Company Page Listing of everyone who works for the company who have profiles on LinkedIn Both of these are great for researching companies. Similar Companies Pick a company that you are interested in and go to their company page. In the bottom right-hand corner, you will find the âPeople Also Viewedâ section. In this example, I have chosen to research Spredfast, an Austin based Social Media startup. The âPeople Also Viewedâ section looks like this: You can click on each company logo to discover what these companies do. They usually include direct competitors, companies in adjacent industries, or companies that have complementary products. Go to the âPeople Also Viewedâ for each of these LinkedIn Company Pages and keep digging. You will likely discover companies that you did not know existed. LinkedIn Mobile App Now, I want you to go to the main LinkedIn mobile app. If you have not installed it on your smartphone, install it now. Search for the Spredfast LinkedIn company page. Your screen should look like this: Scroll to the bottom. When you tap on âSimilar Companies,â you will get the following list: Listen to the most recent episode For me, this listed 32 LinkedIn company pages. Tap on each company, go to the âSimilar Companiesâ section and repeat. Think of this as following breadcrumbs. Although it can be quite tedious, I have had a couple of clients discover companies in adjacent industries or having complementary products who ended up hiring them. LinkedIn Company Pages â" How Youâre Connected In the top right-hand corner of every LinkedIn company page, you will find the âHow Youâre Connectedâ section. You will immediately see if you have any 1st-degree connections. This is the Spredfast company page, and I have two first-degree connections. Your next move is to click on âSee all.â Letâs say I lived in Boston. I want to see if Spredfast has any employees in Boston. I would add Boston as a location. After I click on search, I discover the following. Because of this, I know there are six Spredfast employees in the Boston area. I can now work on ways to reach out to these people to see what they do and how they like working for the company. LinkedIn Company Pages LinkedIn company pages are most valuable when you have a well-defined niche. If you are a sales manager for manufacturing equipment in the food packaging business, then this works very well. The Freelancers Union estimates that one in three American workers are freelance workers and experts predict that this group could grow 6% year over year for the next five years. Companies like Elance and HourlyNerd are further fueling the growth of the freelance market, helping companies connect with workers who can get project work done quickly and at relatively low cost (compared to full-time employees). These marketplaces will continue to grow and provide companies with more, and more high quality options when they need the talent to get a job done as efficiently and cost effectively as possible. There are a lot of benefits to freelance work, including flexibility and the opportunity to work with more people on a more diverse set of challenges, but with its unpredictability and the costs of things like healthcare, freelancing isnât for everyone. So what are you to do in this changing economy if you know full-time employment is more your thing? How can you be the person that a company wants to invest in and develop at a time when companies are less inclined to invest in and develop people? It will be about you, not just your skills Though we are talking about the future, I think the writing is already on the wall â" when companies can easily access a marketplace of workers who can deliver the âhard skillsâ they need to address near-term project needs, for full-time hires theyâll increasingly look to soft skills and attitude, the personal characteristics that drive retention and are more indicative of long-term success. Leadership IQ, a consultancy that works with the likes of Microsoft, IBM and GE studied retention of 20,000 new hires over a 18 month period and found that when people were fired, âlack of skillâ was the reason given only 11% of the time 89% of the time people were let go because of a mismatch in attitude and the intangibles that suggest how a person thinks and works. With the high cost of employee turnover, companies are now focusing more than ever on these types of measures. Just check out the National Association of Colleges and Employersâ list of the skills and qualities employers want, the result of a 208- company survey across industries as diverse of manufacturing and government: 1) Ability to work in a team structure 2) Ability to make decisions and solve problems 3) Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work 4) Ability to verbally communicate with persons inside and outside the organization 5) Ability to obtain and process information 6) Ability to analyze quantitative data 7) Technical knowledge related to the job 8) Proficiency with computer software 9) Ability to create and/or edit written reports 10) Ability to sell or influence others In the top ten, only two of these desired skills and qualities would be considered âhard skillsâ: #7 âtechnical knowledge related to the jobâ and #8 âproficiency with computer software programsâ â" and both of which, in many cases, can be easily taught to the right person. The rest of the top ten are more about soft skills and attitude, the personal characteristics and deeper measures of âthe right personâ that are learned over time through experience. This isnât new; people have been writing about the importance of hiring for attitude and training for skill for years now. Whatâs changed is that the market for short-term, skills-based hires has become so much more efficient (thanks to a thriving freelance economy). As a result, more companies can make better long-term hiring choices without worrying that their immediate needs wonât be served. So to get that full-time job, sell yourself, not just what you can do To sell yourself, youâve got to know yourself and the characteristics that truly define how your think and work. Thatâs often a challenge, though, because the tricky thing about identifying and attesting to your intangibles is that they are, well, intangibles. To get around that fact, try tapping into your network and the people who know you by working with you, ask them how they would recommend you to a potential employer and listen for the language they use â" generally itâs about you, what itâs like to work with you, not your pivot table prowess. When I was a fan, I was in the stands as a freshman when Jim Harbaugh, on 2nd down, threw a 77-yard touchdown pass to the then freshman wide receiver John Kolesar. John Kolesar ran right at the student section and we all went crazy. People were singing and screaming and singing âHail to the Victors!,â waving flags, and it was just something that I could still remember to this day.â I told the team, because it was right before the home opener, that thereâs going to be a whole group of freshmen in those stands tomorrow, who are watching you play, going to the Big House for the first time and never been, and every time that you step onto that football field you will have the chance to make a mark on these people. I donât feel like I have any really discernible talents. But I care an awful lot. Iâm driven. Iâve always been scared of falling short, not succeeding. I always wanted more. And Iâve always been rejected at so many turns in my life whether it was wanting to go to Penn or Tufts and not getting in, or wanting to get into the fraternity at school and not getting in, or wanting to be the football student manager and not getting the job, or applying to newspaper jobs out of college and getting rejected, or wanting to be a columnist once I got to the newspaper and getting rejected. My entire life I was told âno.â And I think every time I was, I was driven to make sure that I can climb back into a spot that would make me happier than I was at that moment. Who is your #1 mentor and why? Hard to say just one. My grandfather, Dave Cohen, was a great man with a positive attitude. Thomas George, former Detroit Free Press and New York Times reporter, helped bring me into the business. Former Broncos VP Jim Saccomano helped raise me in the NFL. And Chris Mortensen has become a great friend and mentor. Whatâs your most memorable sports moment of all-time? Michigan winning the National Championship in basketball in Seattle in 1989, with my college roommates and me in attendance.
